Zakat-ul-Fitr – Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, a mandatory form of almsgiving for eligible Muslims. It’s considered a religious obligation and a core principle of social justice in Islam.
Who is eligible to pay Zakat?
- Sane, adult Muslims who possess wealth exceeding a specific threshold known as Nisab.
- The Nisab value is determined based on the price of gold or silver and differs slightly depending on interpretation.
How much Zakat is paid?
- 2.5% of your total zakatable wealth (after deducting debts).
- This applies to various assets like cash, savings, gold, silver, livestock, and certain types of investments.
When is Zakat due?
- Once a year, at the end of your lunar Islamic year.
- There is some flexibility in timing, but it’s important not to delay it unduly.
How can I distribute my Zakat?
- You can directly distribute it to eligible recipients yourself, like the poor, needy, debtors, travelers, converts, or those working in religious fields.
- Many organizations like Islamic relief charities collect and distribute Zakat effectively.

Zakat-ul Fitr is is a part of Ramadan and is identified by the following characteristics:
1. It comprises about 5.5 pounds of wheat, rice dates, dates, or related food items.
2. Zakat-ul-Fitr can be estimated at the equivalent of $12 US per household member, or the equivalent in most advanced countries.
3. It should be said before Eid prayers unless there is a legal reason to justify a delay.
4. It must be made on behalf of each household member, whether female or male, or adult or minor.
