Ahmad ibn Hanbal (d. 241/855) famous for his deep understanding of hadith, which is the recitation of the Prophet’s words and actions–is a significant character in the time of Islam. His piety and sacrifice made him a popular hero, particularly following his uncompromising resistance to efforts of the two Abbasid caliphs to make him accept the rationalist doctrine.
The subsequent detention and flogging was among the dramatic incidents of the medieval Islamic history. Ibn Hanbal’s rebellion affected the development of Islamic law and the development of Sunnism as well as the authority of the legislature of the caliphate.
