“What is REAL?” The Rabbit asked Nana one day as they lay side-by-side near the nursery fender. It could refer to having things that buzz in your ear and sticking out handles.
The Skin Horse said, “Real is not how you are made.” It’s something that happens to you. You become real when a child is there for you long enough to love you.
“Does it hurt?” The Rabbit asked.
“Sometimes,” the Skin Horse said, because he was always honest. “When you’re Real, you don’t mind getting hurt.”
He asked “Does it happen all in one, like being wound up?”
The Skin Horse said, “It doesn’t happen all at once.” “You become. It takes time. It doesn’t happen often to people who are fragile, have sharp edges or need to be careful. Most of your hair is already trimmed and styled by the time that you become Real. Your eyes will drop out, your joints are sloppy, and your hair will be a mess. These things are irrelevant because you’re Real and can’t be ugly – except to those who don’t get it.
