About the Author
Raymond Briggs was born in London in 1934. When he was 15 years old, he attended Wimbeldon Art School to learn drawing, since the goal was to be cartoonist. However, there was a suggestion that cartooning wasn’t a career for gentlemen, and it was best to become an artist.
Raymond then attended at the Slade School in London to pursue painting full-time as a student. When he had free time, he started to creating a portfolio that included illustrations of every kind that included jackets and many illustrations to send to publishers.
After drawing newspaper ads, advertisements, as well as books Raymond realized that the book illustrations was the one that captivated him the most since it provided more variety and flexibility than any other. Raymond has always felt it difficult to maintain the same style of illustration over longer periods of time. Raymond is always looking to do something innovative and unique in his work.
Raymond’s most well-known works include The Snowman; The Man The Man; The Man; and The Bear. The setting of The Snowmanis is based on Raymond’s home and garden. It is located in Sussex, England at the bottom of the South Downs, a few miles away from Brighton.
