A vigorous argument in defense Arab identity during a period of political turmoil
In the 9th century Abbasid Baghdad the status of social standing associated with the assertion of Arab identity was beginning to wane. The book “The Excellence of Arabs The renowned poet Ibn Qutaybah locks horns with those in his society who disregarded Arabness and exuded the glory of Persian heritage and culture. Instead, he defends the dignity as Arabs and their history even in the face of doubt and criticism.
Suggested Read:
The superiority of Arabs is divided into two sections. First, Arab preeminence that can be described as an extended argument in support of Arab advantage, Ibn Qutaybah accuses his opponents of being blasphemous in their jealousy. In the secondbook, The Excellence of Arab Learning In it, he outlines the various fields of knowledge where the Arabians of pre-Islamic times excelled with regard to divination, the stars horses, horsemanship and poetry. Incorporating extensive extracts from the poetry heritage–“the archives that was the archive of Arabs”–Ibn Qutaybah attempts to prove that poetry itself is sufficient proof for Arab superiority.
Powerful and persuasive, The Excellence of the Arabs is a powerful and important issue at a time that was undergoing a major social shift in the early days of classic Muslim culture: What did what does it mean to be Arab?
