Sylvia Long has illustrated many books for children, including the bestsellers Ten Little Rabbits (best seller) and Alejandro’s Gift (best seller). Ms. Long’s meticulous paintings are inspired in part by her love for animals and the outdoors.
This book celebrates Native American traditions and teaches children how to count from 1 to 10. It also includes storytelling, weaving, fishing, as well as storytelling. The whimsical illustrations are reminiscent of Beatrix Pot and glow with bright color.
They also have fascinating detail. Each number introduces a different aspect of Native American culture such as Pueblo corn dancing or Navajo weaving. The simple text, which rhymes, is complemented by a short afterword about Native American customs. This book is great for bedtime storytime and will leave children counting rabbits rather than sheep.
