Surah Al Masad [111] – Transliteration Explanation and Tafseer

Surah Masad (Arabic text: ٱلمَسَد) is the 111th Surah of the Holy Qur’an. It is titled in English “The Palm Fiber”. Surah Al Masad have 5 verses only .

Here is Surah Al-Masad (The Palm Fiber) with Arabic text and transliteration:
1 تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ TABBAT YADĀ ABĪ LAHABIN WA TABB
2 مَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ MĀ AGHNĀ ‘ANHU MĀLUHU WA MĀ KASAB
3 سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ SAYAṢLĀ NĀRAN DHĀTA LAHAB
4 وَٱمْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةَ ٱلْحَطَبِ WA MRA’ATUHU ḤAMMĀLATA AL-ḤAṬAB
5 فِى جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌۭ مِّن مَّسَدٍۭ FĪ JĪDIHĀ ḤABLUN MIN MASAD

Tafseer of Surah Al-Masad
Verse #1: Abu Lahab, the Prophet’s (PBUH) uncle who had animosity with Prophet is punished with destruction.
Verse #2: He finds out that even though he is filthy rich and very influential he cannot escape Allah’s wrath.
Verse #3: He will roast in Hellfire with flame.
Verse #4: The one who wronged the Prophet is his wife Om Jameel and she is compared to a harm bringer.
Verse #5: A rope of palm fiber to be placed around her neck in Hell fire as a punishment for her crime.

Explanation:

• The one that is used here ( Alif Madd ) length it Four or five Vowel counts ,.
• أَبِي : Yaha only Madd Tapyyia ( 2 ) & Haraks.
• لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ : After Tanween (Two Kasrs ) there comes ( و ) Idgham with Ghunnah
• Idgham with Ghunnah occurs in Four letters ( و – ى – ن – م)
• وَتَبَّ : In (ب) Qalqalah has the following forms, There are five Qalqalah Letters ( ق – ط- ب- -ج – د ) .
• مَا أَغْنَى : Madd Munfasel 4 o 5 Harahs.
• عَنْهُ : Ithaar Halqe because Tanween is followed by Haa – It means to pronoun Tanween Clearly in Tajweed six Ithaar Halqe Letters ( ء – ه -ع – ح -غ – خ ).
• مَالُهُ : Madd Selah Saghrah two Haraks because ( ه) Ha Salah is not followed by Hamzah. like ( هو ).IKhfaa Haqeqe
• Idgham with Ghunnah occurs in Four letters ( و – ى – ن – م)
• وَتَبَّ : Qalqalah in (ب) , There are five Qalqalah Letters ( ق – ط- ب- -ج – د ) .
• مَا أَغْنَى : Madd Munfasel 4 o 5 Harahs.
• عَنْهُ : Ithaar Halqe because Tanween is followed by Haa – Halqe Letters ( ء – ه -ع – ح -غ – خ ).
• مَالُهُ : Madd Selah Saghrah two Haraks because (ــه) Ha Salah is not followed by Hamzah. like ( هو ) .
• كَسَبَ : Qalqalah in (ب).
• نَارًا ذَاتَ : IKhfaa Haqeqe For Tanween ,
• حَمَّالَةَ : Read ( م ) with shaddah two haraks.
• حَبْلٌ : Qalqalah in (ب).
• حَبْلٌ مِنْ مَسَدٍ : Idgham with Ghunnah Juz 30

Short history of Surah Al-Masad

This Surah begins directly with a rebuke to Abu Lahab, the Prophet’s (PEACE BE UPON HIM) own uncle who was an enemy of Islam and a mocker of the Prophet. It has been narrated by Abu Lahab and Al-Abbas in Sahih Bukhari 4971 when the Prophet (PEACE BE UPON HIM) threatened to punish the Quraysh, the latter replied: ‘Die! Is that why you gathered us?”

In response, this Surah was revealed, reciting the following verses: It is not right that, – For Abu Lahab and his wife; [They] shall be in the blazing fire – Booze continues to flow for him, and a miserable doom is on him, he shall have no authority.

Conclusion of Surah Al-Masad

According to Surah Al-Masad those who are opposing Allah and his beloved Messenger (PEACE BE UPON HIM) are destined for utter failure. It curses Abu Lahab, and his wife for their evil, rude and worst attitude and conceit remembering that status and wealth are of no avail regarding Allah’s wrath.

This Surah is indeed a threaten to all disbelievers and an invitation to those who bear animosity towards the truth.
