About this Surah:
Throughout this chapter the writer demonstrates the two available pathways Muslims may choose to follow. Every Muslim has the choice to traverse down the paths of either good or evil. Allah tells us he has given us the ability and intelligence to judge right from wrong and that we will ultimately reap our own destiny.
According to the writer the right path demands great struggles for humans because it functions as a test of both character and discipline. The complex path entails performing three particular deeds consisting of “freeing of a slave” alongside “feeding on a day of severe hunger” along with helping “an orphan of near relationship” or a needy person “in misery”. The right path is also having good character traits like sabr (being patient) and having empathy or compassion towards one another.

| Ayat No. | Arabic Text | Transliteration |
| 1 | لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ | Laa uqsimu bihatha al-balad |
| 2 | وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۭ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ | Wa anta hillun bihatha al-balad |
| 3 | وَوَالِدٍۢ وَمَا وَلَدَ | Wawalidin wama walad |
| 4 | لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍۢ | Laqad khalaqna al-insana fee kabad |
| 5 | أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌۭ | Ayahsabu an lan yaqdiro AAalayhi ahad |
| 6 | يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًۭا لُّبَدًا | Yaqoolu ahlaktu malan lubada |
| 7 | أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ | Ayahsabu an lam yarahu ahad |
| 8 | أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ | Alam najAAal lahu AAaynayn |
| 9 | وَلِسَانًۭا وَشَفَتَيْنِ | Walisanan washafatayni |
| 10 | وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ | Wahadaynahu al-najdayn |
| 11 | فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ | Fala iqtahama al-AAaqabah |
| 12 | وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ | Wama adraka ma al-AAaqabah |
| 13 | فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ | Fakku raqabah |
| 14 | أَوْ إِطْعَٰمٌۭ فِى يَوْمٍۢ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍۢ | Aw itAAamun fee yawmin thee masghabah |
| 15 | يَتِيمًۭا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍۢ | Yateeman tha maqrabah |
| 16 | أَوْ مِسْكِينًۭا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍۢ | Aw miskeenan tha matrabah |
| 17 | ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ | Thumma kana mina allatheena amanoo watawasaw bialssabri watawasaw bialmarhamah |
| 18 | أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ | Ola-ika ashabu almaymanah |
| 19 | وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ | Waallatheena kafaroo bi-ayatina hum as-habu almash-amah |
| 20 | عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌۭ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۭ | AAalayhim narun moosadah |
