QASIDA BURDA SHARIF

My Lord granted me the power and ability but I may be grateful for your favor which you have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and I may do righteous good deed such as please You and I may make my offspring good. Indeed I am repentant towards you and indeed I am of the Muslims Quran (Sura Al-Ahqaf 46:1-5)

The Burda’s Story

Al Busiri also suffered a terrible sickness which incapacitated him. He was determined to write the Burda to ask Allah’s forgiveness and Prophet Muhammad’s intercession. It has been said that after writing Burda he had a dream that the Al Busiri was covered with Burda by the Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him ﷺ. He was cured as from his illness when he woke up.

The Original Burda

However, the Burda as has been referred to is Al Busiri’s Burda but the poem known originally by this name is the work of a pre-Islamic poet Ka’b ibn Zuhair, companion of The Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him ﷺ. Before emulating the brave act in accepting the religion of Islam, Ka’b used to poison the Muslim’s reputation with his poetry.

He later embraced Islam and to the best of his literary ability he recited verses of poetry he composed in which he sought forgiveness for his misdeeds. When he had done the recitation of it, The Prophet ﷺ tossed the garment cape (burda) towards Ka’b. It was therefore called the Burda which in Arabic means ‘the outrage’.
