The Epistle on Legal Theory is the oldest Arabic text in the field of Islamic legal theory. It is also the primary document of Islamic Jurisprudence. The author Muhammad ibn idris al-Shafi’i (d. the year 204/820) was the eponym for the Shafi’i school of legal thinking which is being one of four sacred rites of Sunni Islam.
