Making dua at the time of opening fast

Muhammad (pbuh) revealed a Hadith which states that duaa from three figures remains unanswered – the prayers of just rulers, fasting individuals and oppressed persons. Heaven opens its gates through this duaa and the Lord promises a delayed response although through His great attributes.

Fasting near when you are about to break your fast is the most valuable time to make duaa according to Allah since your hunger reaches its highest point. The act of duaa during this moment strengthens your bond with Allah (swt) while helping you stay focused on the purpose of fasting instead of being consumed by food.

We should protect the time when God will not reject our prayers by avoiding distractions when food is present so we can devote a few minutes of worship and petition to Allah.

When the companions of the prophet (pbuh) broke their fast, they would say:

“O Allah, I ask of You, by Your mercy that encompasses everything, to forgive me.”

Ibn Majah reported from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-Aas that Prophet Muhammad said:

“A fasting person, upon breaking his fast, has a supplication that will not be rejected.”

Fasting for the sake of Allah (swt)

The Prophet (pbuh) said:

According to the noble statement from Allah the Exalted: Each deed of a human being performs for his benefit except fasting which Allah designed exclusively as His reward. I am the only one who will receive the reward for this particular practice which Me alone created for My believers. Fasting is a shield. While fasted on a specific day each Muslim should maintain their calm even if faced with harassment or offenses so they reply: “I am fasting”.

The odor of musk compares favorably to fasting persons’ exhalations which are cherished by Allah during judgment because Allah holds the life of Muhammad PBUH in His power. Upon two specific instances of delight the fasting person rejoices first from breaking the fast then again during their encounter with their Lord about their fasting. (Sahih Muslim)
