According to Sunnah tradition the practice of praying for married couples has its origins. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would recite the following Prayer for his family, asking for happiness, calm, mercy, blessings and contentment for the couple. When the Prophet (PBUH) congratulated a man on his marriage, he said:

Transliteration:

Allāhumma innī as’aluka khayrahā wa khayra mā jabalatahā ʿalayh,
wa aʿūdhu bika min sharrihā wa sharri mā jabalatahā ʿalayh.

Urdu Translation:

اے اللہ! میں تجھ سے اس (عورت) کی بھلائی اور اس چیز کی بھلائی مانگتا ہوں جس پر تُو نے اس کی فطرت بنائی، اور میں تیری پناہ مانگتا ہوں اس کی برائی سے اور اس چیز کی برائی سے جس پر تُو نے اس کی فطرت بنائی۔
