Does Toothpaste Break Fast?

Yes, brushing your teeth can break your fast.

According to Islamic scholars using toothpaste for brushing teeth is generally allowed during fasting, as long as toothpaste is not swallowed. Although, the use of a Miswak, a traditional teeth-cleaning twig, is highly recommended and holds significant value in Islamic tradition, especially before prayers and upon waking in the morning.

People choose either tasteless miswak or toothpaste before dawn for their Suhur meal. The Sunnah validity of fasting remains unaffected by non-brushing at Suhur time but one can use a mistake as a replacement if needed.

The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) teachings are a main source of inspiration for the usage of Miswak, a natural twig used for oral cleanliness. In Islamic culture, it is highly valued for both its spiritual importance and health advantages.

People should avoid using toothpaste internally since its primary purpose remains dental care. Fasting begins only when something moves without digestion into your body. The restriction against toothpaste usage shows excessive strictness.

The recommended fasting practice is to preserve religious purity through responsible use of miswak or toothpaste.

May Allah give us discernment in our deeds, good wills, desires and lead us during this holy month of The Holy Ramadan.

Allah Almighty knows best.
