The pre-Islamic warrior poet ‘Antarah ibn Shaddad, a poet who wrote one of the Mu’allaqats, attracted the attention of Philologists who were in Iraq during the beginning of the study of scholarly studies of Arabic. 

Philologists gathered and studied the diwans of ‘Antarah, as part of their codification and recovery of the Jahiliyyah The ‘Antarah diwan was later included as part among the Six Poets, a collection of pre-Islamic poets who were associated with al-Asma’ias “the father of Arabic philology.”

Two centuries later the poets of al-Andalus the al-Batalyawsi, al-Shantamari, made their comments on diwans in the Six Poets. This study reveals the literary background of ‘Antarah’s diwan . It also presents five editions, along with a an apparatus for critical analysis, from the existing recensions that are based on a thorough compilation of the manuscripts that survived.
