Color Zoo by Lois Ehlert was an American author and illustrator who lived from November 9, 1934 to May 25, 2021. Her books were mainly about nature. Ehlert was awarded the Caldecott Honor for Color Zoo 1990. [1] Her other works include Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Cuckoo/Cucu/Un cuento folklorico Mexicano.

Lois Ehlert was the Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator and author of Color Zoo as well as Color Farm, and Cirque. Many other books were illustrated by her, including the beloved chicka Chicka Boom.
Biography
Lois Ehlert continues to push the boundaries of traditional bookmaking with her highly original books. Young children are drawn to her vivid colors, unusual book shapes, intricate page cut, and photographed collages.
Ehlert made art using scissors, paper and glue as well as thread, wire, textiles, and things she found on the street. She was an artist, author, and a graphic designer. This allowed her to create the tone for her books through both the design and carefully selected rhythmic words.
The Artistic Lifestyle
Lois Ehlert was raised in a home where “people were always creating things.” Her mother, a skilled seamstress, taught her how to sew and gave her bright scraps of fabric. Her father, a woodworker, gave her scraps from his basement workshop. Lois developed a passion for bright colors, and a talent for creating interesting textures with non-traditional art supplies. Her headquarters was an old card table.
