- Developing God-consciousness: The main purpose of fasting is to cultivate taqwa, which translates to “piety” or “God-consciousness”. This involves developing awareness of God’s presence and striving to please Him through our actions.
- Spiritual and ethical benefits: Fasting is believed to bring numerous spiritual and ethical benefits, including self-discipline, empathy for the less fortunate, and increased gratitude for God’s blessings.

Details of Ramadan Fasting:
- Month of revelation: As mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 185: “The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion…” Fasting during Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, holds special significance as it commemorates the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad.
- Abstention from food and drink: The fast includes abstaining from all food and drink, as well as marital relations and other sinful activities, from dawn to dusk.
- Exceptions and exemptions: The Quran acknowledges exceptions and exemptions from fasting, such as for travelers, the sick, the elderly, pregnant women, and menstruating women. These individuals are required to make up the missed fasts later or offer alternative acts of worship.

During this month, called Ramadan, it was believed that the Qur’an had been revealed as an instruction to the people, with clear evidence of honest guidance, and as the Criterion (between right and wrong).
Also, those who live to see the month should observe it, and those who are sick or travelling should watch for the equivalent number of days instead.
