This year, Summer 2020 was a little different. People had to find ways of enjoying all Summer has to bring, while still adhering to the “new norm” and practicing social distancing. Minnesotans are lucky to have a few months with perfect weather. We love to take advantage of that. It’s a blessing to be able to enjoy the outdoors and to visit it. Minnesota is home to the Mall of America and 10,000 lakes. There must be something for everyone. Let’s now talk about the top, must-see places in Minnesota this summer.

Visit Duluth or the North shore

You are missing out if you haven’t taken the drive to the North shore or Duluth. You will find some amazing views and delicious food along the shores Lake Superior, the largest Great Lake in the United States. Duluth can be found in the harbor, where you can view some of the largest ships and barges that you have ever seen. Nearly every hotel has a view to the beautiful bay or the huge lake.

There are many local breweries and distilleries as well as all-around great food in Duluth. You can take a walk to grab ice cream or watch the barges pass under the lift bridge. Although many of the events, such as the Grandma’s Marathon and music festivals, were cancelled due to the pandemics, there’s plenty to see and do in Duluth, while you’re safe.

You can drive further north if you want to. Pass Duluth and make stops at the North shore or Grand Marais for stunning views of Lake Superior and the Split Rock Lighthouse. There are many great places to camp, hike, camp or rent a cabin, Air Bnb, on the North shore. The best part is that it’s often cooler up there than in the city, so you can take a break from the hot summer air.

Enjoy a Movie at Vali-Hi Drive-In

Minnesota still has a drive-in! Sixteen to be exact. One stands out, however: Vali Hi Drive-in Lake Elmo. It is only a 30-minute drive from Minneapolis. It’s a great place to bring your family or partner to enjoy a fun date night. You can also easily follow COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Right now they are only allowing half the capacity, with one spot between cars and limiting people from visiting concessions. You will need a FM radio with a battery, if you don’t want to drain your car battery, some pillows or blankets, as well as some snacks and drinks. They play a double-feature, rain or shine. Their shows are updated frequently so make sure to check their website!

A Day Trip to Stillwater

Stillwater, which is situated on the St. Croix River, has received many accolades including the Top 5 Midwest Towns To Visit Now and the Top 10 “Prettiest Cities in America” according to Forbes Magazine. Wow! This beautiful historic town is perfect for a day trip or a local escape. You can also take a walking tour to learn about the history of one of the oldest cities in our state.

You can have a snack and a picnic alongside the St. Croix. You can take in the views from the lift bridge and enjoy the fresh air. Or, you could go to one of the nearby wineries or breweries to have a taste or to bring along a bottle for your picnic.

There are many bike trails for those who enjoy the outdoors, as well as walking routes to see sights. The website of Stillwater recently revealed that the historic Lift Bridge and the tail end section on the St. Croix Crossing Loop Trail have been renovated and are now open to the public. Crossing the Stillwater lift bridge, the St. Croix Crossing Loop trail heads into Wisconsin and loops back along the river to Stillwater. This sounds like a wonderful day spent in one of the most beautiful areas of the state.

Taylor’s Falls Scenic Boat Tours

Taylor’s Falls, a small community on the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin, is equally historic and beautiful. You can see the beautiful Taylor’s Falls by hiking or on one of their scenic boat tours. The scenic boat tours are able to adjust a few things in order to comply with state guidelines regarding COVID, while still offering a beautiful experience to all guests.

Good hand hygiene and social distancing will be a priority for guests. After the July 24-th state-wide mandate, masks will be required for the lower deck. The upper deck will remain unaffected as long as social distancing and hand hygiene are observed.

The old argument that the Wisconsin side is better than the Minnesota one is still valid. While we won’t be involved in the debate, we can tell you that each side has its own benefits. The Minnesota side has boat tours, a more scenic point and easy access to an ice cream shop across the lot. The Wisconsin side has beautiful trails and stunning landscapes created by glaciers.

Local Camping

Travelling by plane or across state lines became less attractive during the pandemic. More people are choosing to spend their vacations locally. Camping in Minnesota is a great way to do this. You can camp in an RV, camper or tent anywhere you want. There are beautiful spots all over Minnesota.

Minnesota camping is accessible to anyone, no matter where they are located. You can go west to Lake Maria State Park or Sibley State Park or east to Afton State Park or Interstate State Park. All allow camping in an RV, camper, tent, or motorhome. The state guidelines currently allow only one tent per campsite. However, there might be exceptions for people living in the same household. You can take your own vacation by packing your car, your tent, sleeping bags and lots of food. It’s quite convenient!

Take a hike on one of the many State Park Trails

Minnesota also has 67 state parks, 23 state trails and 10,000 lakes. You can get a state park pass to visit the top state parks and trails in Minnesota, or to improve your local walk. You can visit the highly-rated Itasca State Park or Afton State Park. Tettegouche State Park is also available. Fort Snelling and are just a few of the many options. You can also cross the Wisconsin border to visit Willow River State Park and Kinnickinnic State Park. The park ranger stations close at night so make sure to purchase your passes online in advance.

You don’t need to stay home all summer, bored in your living room or patio. Take a lunch and some sunscreen with you, and head out to these beautiful spots right from your front door. Even if you only order take-out at your favorite Twin Cities restaurant, there are many options. Minnesota is a beautiful place with many beautiful attractions. Minnesota is a beautiful state. Enjoy the outdoors, and take in all it has to offer.
